Kristallnacht - The November Pogroms

What is meant by the term Kristallnacht?

Kristallnacht is also known as the Crystal Night in German. Could also be called the Broken Glass or the November Pogroms, the night when the Nazis attack the Jewish people and their properties. The name Kristallnacht precisely refers to the shattered glass that was left in the streets after this event happened. The violence was pursued till November 10 1938 and carried on for several more days in some places.

When did this event occur?

This event took place on the 9th and 10th of November, the year 1938.

How many synagogues did the programme claim were burned?

It was said that over 1000 synagogues were badly damaged and burned in just under two days and night. As well as their hospitals, homes, schools, and even cemeteries were vandalized. Even worse, over 7000+ Jewish businesses were looted and rioted, which lay hold of 91 Jewish lives.

How many Jews were claimed to have died as a result of this event?

As stated in the previous question, this event took the lives of 91 Jewish people.

How many were said to have been sent to concentration camps?

There were over 30,000 Jewish males, ages ranging from 16 - 60, were arrested and sent to concentration camps. Due to a lot of new prisoners coming in, the number of concentration camps enlarged.

What was the reaction of the German people to these events?

After this gruesome event, the way Germans look at Jewish people has completely changed. Their perspective of the Jewish people has been the same as how the Nazis look at them. They start to believe that whatever Nazis say about the Jewish people is true. Though this was happening, some Germans started to question the accusations that were being put into the Jewish mankind. They started to question if what they were doing was right if the violence towards the people and their territories was the right way to react to the situation.

Nuremberg Laws - Social Studies

 1. Provide two examples of ways in which the Nuremberg laws affected the rights of German Jews.

  • They are prohibited from marrying, having sexual relations with someone else other than their kind. For example, if you are a Jew, you are not allowed to marry someone who is German. The same goes for the Germans.

  • Jewish patients were no longer admitted to municipal hospitals in Düsseldorf. German court judges could not refer to legal commentaries or opinions written by Jewish authors. Jewish officers were expelled from the army, and Jewish university students were not allowed to sit for doctoral exams.

  1. What other actions were taken that discriminated against Jews in Germany? (Remembering)

  • People with Jewish grandparents who had converted to Christianity could still be identified as Jews.

  • Jewish people were not allowed to vote or hold public offices.

  1. Why do you think that the Nazis passed these laws? (Understanding)

I think that the Nazis passed these laws because of what Hitler said. These things were stated in the book that Hitler wrote while he was still in jail. He didn’t have any proper reason on why he started hating or picking on the Jewish people. All he did was hate one race and somehow make others believe him and help him make his plans come to reality.

  1. If a New Zealand government passed a law that provided for different treatment of a named racial group in New Zealand, what do you think the reaction of most New Zealand people would be? Why do you think this might be the case? (Applying)

If it was to happen in New Zealand, I think that the reaction of the people would be shocking. The reason being is that New Zealand is not the type of country that would do something like it. New Zealand is a diverse country and is very accepting of people from different countries.

  1. Do you think these Nuremberg laws were racist? Explain your point of view. (Evaluating)

Yes, I think that these Nuremberg laws are racist. Mainly because they are only focusing on one race, on the country. They are trying to bring the race down together with the innocent people who didn’t do anything wrong. They are getting wrongfully blamed for something that they had nothing to do with.

Week Reflection - Wananga

For this week's reflection, I'm going to be talking about the badminton game that we had earlier this week. In the competition, we versed CGHS (Christchurch Girl's High School). We made our way to their school right after our school so that we won't be late for the game and not get a default loss. It wasn't really that hard to make our way there since we were using GPS, there were just some close roads which was annoying. When we got to their school, I was really surprised. It was big and spacious. All, in conclusion, we won all our games.

What did Hitler actually say about the Jews - Social Studies

For the previous lesson that we had in Social Studies, our teacher made us pick two statements from a part of the book Hitler wrote. After choosing the two statements, we then had to briefly explain why we think it's anti-Semitism towards the Jewish people.

Here are the statements and the brief explanation:

“...spying on the unsuspicious German girl he plans to seduce.....he wants to contaminate her blood and remove her from the bosom of her own people.” -This statement shows anti-sentimism against the jews since the sentence is mainly targeting the other race. The hatred towards the jews is unacceptable since it all started from Hitler’s words and beliefs. He wanted to randomly hate a certain race or certain people for no exact reason or

“The Jew hates the white race and wants to lower its cultural level so that the Jews might dominate.” - This statement shows anti-sentimism between the two races trying to go against each other. It shows that the whites are afraid to be dominated by the jews and are trying to find a solution by putting them down.
