DNA Extraction - Kiwi Fruit

Aim: To take the DNA from the kiwi fruit.

Equipment:

  • Kiwi Fruit
  • Beaker
  • Ziplock bag
  • Salt
  • Liquid Detergent
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Water
  • Filter
  • Popsicle stick
Method:
  1. Cut the kiwi fruit in half and peel
  2. Put the rest of the kiwi fruit in the ziplock bag and mush it carefully
  3. After mushing properly, put one to two pinches of salt and half a cup of water
  4. Mix together carefully
  5. Once mixed together, put the filter on top of the beaker and start pouring the mixture in carefully
  6. When finished, lightly pull the sides of the filter and squeeze softly. Don't squeeze too hard since it might make the filter rip
  7. Pour the mixture into a test tube then put rubbing alcohol on top
  8. There you will start to see the DNA. You can use the popsicle stick to scoop up the DNA and look at it closely.
